“My child arrived just the other day,
He came through the world in the usual way.
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay.
He learned to walk while I was away.
And he was talking ‘fore I knew it, and as he grew,
He’d say, “I’m gonna be like you, dad.
You know I’m gonna be like you.”
And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man on the moon.
“When you coming home, dad’” “I don’t know when,
But we’ll get together then.
were gonna have a good time then.”
My son turned ten just the other day.
He said, “Thanks for the ball, dad, come on let’s play.
Can you teach me to throw’” I said, “Not today,
I got a lot to do.” He said, “That’s ok.”
And he walked away, but his smile never dimmed, and
Said, “I’m gonna be like him, yeah.
You know I’m gonna be like him.”
And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man on the moon.
“When you coming home, dad’” “I don’t know when,
But we’ll get together then.
were gonna have a good time then.”
Well, he came from college just the other day,
So much like a man I just had to say,
“Son, I’m proud of you. Can you sit for a while’”
He shook his head, and he said with a smile,
“What I’d really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys.
See you later. Can I have them please’”
And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man on the moon.
“When you coming home, son’” “I don’t know when,
But we’ll get together then, dad.
were gonna have a good time then.”
I’ve long since retired and my son’s moved away.
I called him up just the other day.
I said, “I’d like to see you if you don’t mind.”
He said, “I’d love to, dad, if I could find the time.
You see, my new job’s a hassle, and the kid’s have the flu,
But it’s sure nice talking to you, dad.
It’s been sure nice talking to you.”
And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me,
He’d grown up just like me.
My boy was just like me.
And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man on the moon.
“When you coming home, son’” “I don’t know when,
But we’ll get together then, dad.
you know well have a good time then.”
Want a copy of this’ I’ll send ya a CD with all my Chapin vids on it! Send me a message, invite me as a friend. We’ll talk! http://www.youtube.com/group/harrychapinfans Story of my own…I went with a friend to see Harry in 1981, at the O’Keefe Centre (now renamed Hummingbird).I was livin in Toronto at the time. He played Hamilton Place shortly after, and this concert was made into a tv program. The show was amazing, of course. After the show, he stood out in the lobby, as he’d promised, and signed autographs for any and all who wanted to meet him. Apparently he did this at every concert. Good platform to also encourage donations to his World Hunger project. Anyways, the lineup to see him was huge, of course, and, knowing that we would be seeing him again, at Ontario Place outdoor theatre in August 81, (a smaller venue), we decided we’d skip trying to meet him this night, and do it after the Ontario Place show. “..we’re gunna have a good time then…..”
July 16th, 1981 the music stopped.

this song is so great
Tas yr labs! (This is good!)
This was a song we had played over our TV and airwaves in Northern Ireland during the height of the Troubles. It was portrayed in an advert about a young man who joined the paramilitaries instead of staying at home and being the father his son wanted him to be. It touches many many chords with me thanks to that, brings back so many memories of what is now thankfully gone, hopefully gone in my wee country.
This is the greatest song about a father and son relationship in pop history. The other great one is Father & Son by Cat Stevens. peace.
Thank god im not a monkey
No the Ugly kid joe version is great too. Kind of depressing song.
sounds the best to me unlike the other ones they are horrible
because just like he didnt have time for his son, his son didnt have time for him
yes, plus he wrote it and many others, the best of the best
is he the orginal singer?
which caused his son to become “just like him”
check out tribute to harry song by tragnilrats

The term “He is immortal” has the intention that his music lives on, and he will always be in our hearts… not that he will actually live forever, love this song.. heck we all do..

To this day, after all these years, this song can still bring a tear to the eye. Harry Chapin; the MASTER of the story telling song.
